Two years away from being Tulip Queen and this year's festival was still just as stressful, but just as rewarding, as 2008's tulip festival. Nora was a page for the 2010 Queen and court, so snapping photos in her Huizen (same city as my costume) girl garb was a blast. I was also blessed enough to attend a queen and court reunion luncheon. Seeing queen's and courts from as early as 1941 gave me a real sense of the heritage involved with tulip court. Come out to the festival sometime and you'll probably see my in my saucer hat and voluminous costume calling out "bloomen te koop" as I walk along the parade route.

My mom and I went shooting earlier this week. She took me to this old, decrepit farm house surrounded by a sea of earth already planted with corn. It was amazing, yet haunting. The small house an island of what used to the be small rural farmstead. I'd love to do a series on the house imagining what people might have done there when it was all ship shape.

I know it's past easter weekend, but I finally got all of my pictures off my camera. I had so much fun seeing Chance over his spring break. We even got to paint eggs with his sister and brother. The day I found Elliot Erwitt within the online gallery Soulcatcher Studios, I fell in love with his beautiful black and white images of France and Coastal America. His images always tell a story and evoke an emotion. If I can become half the photographer that Elliot was I will die happy. He pohtographed the likes of Marilyn Monroe and Jaqueline Kennedy. This morning I had to finish my beacon assignments and so I went to take a picture of Edwin in the pig barns. Though I couldn't get my camera settings completely figured out, I came away with some good shots and my hair smelling slightly less than shower fresh :) Thank goodness for soap!

For Christmas my parents gave me a canon 1D Mark II! The first one got lost in the mail, so I just got the camera in my hot little hands a couple days ago. I'm so excited to have my very own, professional grade camera! Here's a few of my first pictures using it.

Every Christmas my mom and I play Acquire. She beat me by $300 dollars this year, if I had just bought one more imperial, I might have had enough to win. Or if she would have merged festival with imperial instead of American, like I wanted. However, I'm going to dominate her next year. I hope.

Crazy Week

So this week has been crazy. On tuesday, my Grandma Buntsma died peacefully in her sleep just after breakfast. So, that was hard, but we really came together as a family to get everything ready for the funeral this morning and with cleaning out her room. While it was really hard, it was good to see the family together and to have that final closure. On Tuesday, not long after talking with my parents, I was able to take pictures of a couple from down the hall. They were awesome to take pictures of and I had so much fun getting pictures of them goofing around. Happy 3 years Becca and Dan!

These past few weeks have been so busy with school and shooting that I haven't had hardly any time to put pictures up! Therefore, I'm fixing the problem with this massive post. In the past few weeks I gotten to take pictures of so much. There's April, a girl I've babysat since she was about 5, and she is so beautiful in her new point shoes. I've also finalized my portfolio that I'll be sending out to various art schools. I went to visit my friend Elayna and had a ball at this little coffee shop and taking our "senior pictures" again. Finally, I was blessed with the opportunity to take pictures of my neighbor and her boyfriend. They brought along his best friend and it was just a blast. Enjoy!

The Leaf

The other day I made a photo story as part of a new photography project that I want to start working on. Since it's super cutesy and kinda silly, I thought that I would share it. :) Enjoy.

Once upon a time, there was a leaf. But it wasn't a normal leaf, it was a little different. When I found it on a tree, I though, "this doesn't belong here!" So I set out to discover where it really did belong.

So, I tried to put it on other trees, but it didn't match the berry tree.

It looked too lonely on the tree with no leaves.

The leaf looked not right on a trunk. I'm not sure why, but I know that the leaf did not belong there. By now, I'm sure that it was getting lonely, so I tried other places for it to belong to.

But, it definitely was not part of a pine tree.

The flowers and the leaf were not meant to be either.

Well, the push pin and the pumpkin matched, but the leaf still
didn't look comfortable.

So, I made the leaf its own tree!

Halloween NWC Style

I know this is a little late, but since the school paper didn't run the story, I thought that I'd include this picture in my blog. As "good Christians" we do not celebrate Halloween at NWC but rather we celebrate the Reformation and Martin Luther tacking the 95 thesis to the church doors in Germany. To represent this I designed a picture in which Martin Luther smashed a jack-o-lantern in order to symbolize our rebellion against Halloween. Enjoy.

California Dreaming

This year for fall break I was blessed enough to be able to go to California to visit potential schools and see my boyfriend Chance. It was awesome. I now have two schools left in the pool and I'm really excited. I can't wait to go to school and study photography, the thing I'm so very passionate about. Of course, seeing Chance was wonderful, amazing and just fantastic. We got to see "Where the Wild Things Are" and have been howling at each other since. :) After some critiques of my portfolio, I've decided to start working almost exclusively with film and see what the results are. I love working with my father's camera, it has so much history and nostalgia surrounding it. I love every little bit of photography and working hard to become better. Well, without further adou here are some of the pictures I shot while on my California trip!

In my history of theater class we learned much about Vaudeville, so to illustrate what we learned our teacher took us to Alton's old opera house. It was one of the coolest things to poke around in there and feel what entertainment must have been like in that era. The stage had signatures of the people and plays that went through the theater and it also house a huge projector. I feel so blessed to be able to truly take a trip through time to experience a little bit of what people loved in an era before my time. Thanks Dr. Bob.

Daddy's Camera

I love my dad. He's one of my biggest role models and he's just a plain old dork too. When I was little he read to me every night (we brought the Hardy Boys, Happy Hollisters and Nancy Drew back). Now we love to watch 1960 era cult classic British spy shows (Avengers- yes please!). Whenever I have a question he'll do all this research to find the answer. Plus he's a copy editor so he can correct all my school papers before I hand them in, just like a grammar fairy! Before my dad worked at Staples Promotional Products he used to work for the news papers around the Orange City area. Of course, back in those days, when you were a writer you were also a photographer for that assignment. I recently pulled out my dad's old camera and am starting to learn to shoot with it. I love learning how to use the film camera and I love that it only has a 50 mm lens, so that when I go to adjust the focus, I can see it focus in the viewfinder before I take the picture(the beacon's canon rebel doesn't have that very important feature). I shot my first half role of film and am very excited to get those pictures and the mystery ones left on the film role back. Today I learned how to change the film, but I'm not sure if I can do it again. I'll just have to ask my mom again. :) Anyways, I'm very excited to show you all my film pictures when I get them back. I love old cameras, thanks Daddy!

p.s. I also love my mom tons and tons too. She gave me the creative streak that I'm now trying to tap into more and she gave me some great eyes (but with Dad's horrible prescription)!

Escape from Witch Mountain OR trip to minneapolis

This past weekend LA (Losers Anonymous) made a trip to Minneapolis to escape the lameness that we feel embodies NWC (at least for us, we do realize that NWC is a great fit for many of its students). We decided on Minneapolis because I wanted to see my very pregnant cousin and to fix my computer. We had fun meeting up with Morgan, one of my best high school friends, meeting a sitar player, perusing the MOA and racing against the clock to get Dan home on time. All in all it was an escape that we all needed.

Josh and Greta

I got to shoot my first engagement shoot today. It was of Josh and Greta, they're an awesome couple and made it really easy to get great photographs. I used JJ's camera which had a really high exposure setting on, so most of the pictures turned out really light, but it kinda gave them an ethereal glow. You know. I was able to make a super cute, at least I think so, video out of them though. We may even be able to get a couple more sessions in, this time with correct exposure settings. Anyways, here's the video, I used a Bella Ruse song called "Remember Me." Look it up, that band will change your listening habits forever. Ok, maybe not forever, but you will be inclined to infuse some jazz into whatever is on your ipod.

Abundance

Today I was struck by this little article that I cut out of "The Fray" magazine last month. It has a lot of good stuff to say about how to live, so I thought I'd share it with you all. Enjoy it because I truly believe that if more people perscribed to this philosophy, we'd have a lot more abundance and fewer empty lives.

get into abundance- the fray

In the morning give thanks. Throughout the day have faith. Use less by recycling and reusing to reduce overabundance. When you are of service to others it becomes easier to see the fullness of your life. Give to recieve. Wealth is within...focus on scarcity and you will be unsatisfied; focus on abundance and you will be fulfilled. Connect and share your time with others. Go with the flow...if nature can create galaxies then surely it can create harmony in our lives. Laugh out loud...a full heart develops through laughter. Rather than a house full of things pray for fullness in life. Having money without enjoyment is not abundance. Make joyful choices. Practice self-care...creating a rich life requires that you nurture yourself–only then can you shine.

I've been making lots and lots of crafts lately, but here's an art project Chance and I did about 3 weeks ago that I never shared with you. It was the result of a deeply discounted water color set at michael's and a splash of creativity on my (and Chance's) part. I think it turned out really well. I'd hang it on my wall at least, but then again, I might be a titch biased.

Today I wish a voice from heaven would tell me "Katie, you have potential, go to art school and be a photographer." or "Katie, psych would be a scary and long road, but it's your destiny." Clash of the Classes Contest

For NWCs big "Clash of the Classes" (to be said in a booming announcer voice of course), I was procured to take pictures for the sophomore class. It was my assignment to take a landscape and humorous picture. So, Friday morning I went out while the light was still clean and yellowish to take some landscape pictures. While on assignment, I found this sign that said "slow children playing." Thus a genius idea was born. Why not have that sign in the forefront of a picture of college kids playing around dressed in professional, office type clothing, we are here, after all, striking a balance between adult and child. I got some of my wonderful theater friends to help me out with taking the pictures and I think we got some pretty good stuff (of course birdy wanted to help out too, he adds so much color to all my shots!). Here's the best from both shoots and a video I made of the compilation of the humor shots.

On Saturday I said goodbye to Chance and moved into school all within 24 hours of each other which was terrifying. I have been so scared to go back to northwestern this year just because of everything that happened last year. Plus saying goodbye to Chance and not knowing when I'll see him next is probably one of the worst feelings in the world. But it's going to be ok....I hope. We'll see. Good thing is that I'm looking more forward to keeping in the photography groove and I got my parents to consider letting me go to the Academy of Art, so that's good news. It looks absolutely amazing over there and I want to go so badly! At least for today. I'm going to take this whole deciding my life path decision slowly so that way I live with no regret cause who wants that? But yeah, this decision has been weighing down on me for the past bit and leaving Chance is never easy. So, of course, I turned to looking at the pictures that I've taken in CA and that made me feel better. mmmmm....comfort pictures.

Duck Pond

So there's this duck pond like two ca blocks away from Dwight's house (ca blocks are like ia farm blocks). Langdon and I went there for a picnic the other day and he lived it up. We were there for about 3 hours and it was so fun. I finished up my photography text book and Langdon made friends with all the other duck feeders. It was so much fun that we went back again yesterday and stayed 3 hours again. He didn't watch tv all afternoon! Yes!!!!!!

I finally found internet! Yay! So here are some pictures from what we've been up to lately. Last week saturday we explored around 2nd street in long beach and it was so fun. I found this shirt that said "love youself is the secret." I really want that shirt cause I think too often I get caught up in trying to please everyone around me and forget to make sure that I'm happy first. Because when you really think about it, if you're happy, the people around you are going to be happy and be happy for you. Then it's a whole circle of happy! So, I kinda want that shirt.

Then I taught Langdon some swimming lessons during the week and worked with him on multiplication tables. I love that kid, but he is slower than anyone I have ever seen when it comes to sitting him down to do his multiplication.

Tonight Chance and I are going to meet Lauren there for open mic night and listen to all the off the map people express themselves. Yay! I'm so excited. I love hanging out there.

Eden

So, the other day I was taking care of Langdon and I went to go get him over at the park. When I got there, he was pulling down big branches off the trees. Being semi-hippie, I started giving him a firm talking to. I explained that the earth is in an environmental crisis and that God's largest charge to Adam in the garden (after follow me and no fruit) was to take care of the creation around him. Impressing upon him this very important fact, Langdon said a startling thing. "Katie, I think I know why they haven't found Eden," he said, "I think it's all around us." What an interesting concept. While it might not be true, what if we started to treat the whole earth as if it was the garden of paradise. Would we start to appreciate the unique features of every landscape? Would we work harder to find less impactful ways to do things. Would we strive to stay organic and give back when we take? How different would the world be if we had tried to treat it like the wost wonderful thing and the most lovely paradise ever? What if the whole world is Eden?

So I was looking at this cute leather jacket online (cause I want to get a leather jacket to wear with lots of dresses cause I think wearing dresses all the time is awesome) and I stumbled on this contest to win a trip with TOM's shoes and Element skateboards. So I'm going to try my luck at this contest with this little essay. Read it and tell me what you think!

To begin, I want to divulge that I have no experience with skateboarding. What I do have is a passion for social justice and a passion for kids. After reading a novel about one abused girl’s journey towards regaining her life as an innocent child, I felt a need to actively take part in changing the lives of impoverished and neglected children. By giving a child a pair of shoes, a skateboard and some undivided attention, that child gains so much more than a toy and some kicks. The act of true giving mandates that the benefactor also give love and respect. When a child feels this love and respect it cultivates a love and respect of self; two invaluable tools for future happiness. Given that boost the can help a child grow mentally, emotionally and (and, of course) physically. TOM’s and Element’s partnership in generosity helps to provide this necessary boost. I want to be a part of this amazing project because I’m tired of the distance we put between ourselves and the world’s desperate need for help. Society has a problem with passively letting the needs of the world be contained to 30 second sound bites and bumper stickers. We are content to give a sad sigh and move on immediately. Instead of continuing this constant compartmentalization, I want to help solve the poorly presented, easily ignored problems that need immediate attention. Because, as I see it, one pair of shoes and a skateboard can take a child much further than just down the road.

Even if you don't believe in God, I think the thought of someone tromping around up there, looking over things is pretty comforting. Ok, picture now.

Dog Walk

Living at the Dwight's has some certain responsibilities and some of those involve walking Lulu! She's a cute little puppy who's about four months old and she's definitely still got that crazy puppy energy (much to the chagrin 14 year old blind and deaf Sam). So now I take her on two mile walks just to calm her down a little bit. Here's some pics from the walk we took yesterday.

So, for our one year anniversary (dating) Chance and I celebrated by going to the cliffs with a grocery bag packed full of candles, chocolate, plastic wine glasses, and sparkling grape juice. We explored the cliffs all day and then enjoyed the sunset with our amenities. It was so fun. Next year we're going to top it by adding real wine glasses and real wine (since we'll be 21). Oh and no creepy man threatening to call the cops cause we had some candles and went over the fence. Note, it's not cool to threaten someone when they're already complying with your demands. Yesterday we went to 500 days of summer and then hit up locals night in huntington. The movie was very good and super artsy, the bacon wrapped hot dogs we ate were super tasty. All in all a great day. So here's some pics from the two days. I hope you all are doing well!

Chance is currently sleeping and I'm semi bored, but not bored enough to eat anything, so I guess I'm blogging. I don't really have any new pictures so I thought that I'd post some of my favorite kid pictures. I babysit a lot and bringing a camera along has brought another joy factor to the whole experience. Kids are just so fun to photograph and often take better candids than adults, so the pictures end up beign really fun. Enjoy!

I love Tyler's big smile and squinty eyes. He and Nora always scream "hi katie" (often followed by "where are you going?" or "what are you doing?") at me whenever I leave the house. It makes me feel so loved and appreciated.

When kylie found this old camera and started imitating me, I just couldn't resist snapping a few photos. Honestly, she's the cutest with her crazy curly super blonde hair.

I missed the ideal time to snap a photo through kylie's playhouse window, but I'm still very happy with how the picture turned out. It was so fun to play outside again after the long winter.

I just started babysitting Reagan a few months ago and love it. She's so cute and adorable. I love how the fading evening light played up her hair.

So I made some movies this morning and then guess what I posted them. I made them with imovie and turns out that apple rocks at everything. Hopefully tomorrow I can get out and get lots of shots since my camera died today, but I got some photography texts and books to study though! I hope that you really enjoy the movies! The first is called "Disappearing Jelly Beans" that Chance and I made in the basement where he stayed during the summer in the OC. Starting Out

As a 20th birthday present to myself, I am beginning a blog to try and accomplish something. Currently, I am trying to decide what to do with my life. I narrowed it down to either psychology (to one day be a clinical child psychologist) or photography. I know I can study, but I'm not sure if I'm any good with a camera in my hands, thus, the blog. I recently promised myself to take one picture that I like everyday and so to begin here are some of my favorite shots to date. The first photo is of my boyfriend and I's bowling shoes, the second is Kylie through her playhouse window, the third is Raegan's shoe (I babysit both little girls), and the forth is a picture I took for the tulip festival's photo contest.
